Carl Heinrich Merck was a physician, a naturalist and an explorer in
Germany. He was born in 1761 and died in 1799. Fifty years after
George Wilhelm Stellar (1709-1746), he visited the islands
Aléoutiennes in 1787-1790. An English edition of the journal of the
expedition appears in 1980 under the title of north-western Siberia
and America.
The majority shares of the company are owned by the Merck family in
Germany. In 2006, companies Merck and Bayer AG fought for the
acquisition of Schering. After that Schering has rejected a first
offer of Merck, it accepted a higher bid from Bayer, which has made
significant purchases of shares. Merck won in a few days a profit of
about 400 million Euros. In 2005, the total annual net profit stood
at 658.9 million Euros.
